Champion of Life

There was this highlight at the recent London 2012 Olympic Games when the world stood still for a Men’s 100m finals. But as Usain Bolt convincingly won his gold medal with a new Olympic record in the back of my mind there was already another story that was about to unfold itself a full month later at the London 2012 Paraolympic Games.

Above The Clouds

Above The Clouds

It is hardly possible to imagine, while waking up to a cloudy grey morning, that clear blue sky with glaring sunlight awaits you merely a stone throw away. Dovška Baba (The Maiden of Dovje) is an 1891m high, easy to reach, peak in the Karavanke Mountain range, just above the place where I live, Mojstrana. An alpine dairy stays mostly abandoned during the winter months, while in the season it is full of grazing cattle. (more…)

World Rowing on Tri-X

Another day of the World Rowing Championships at Bled. This time I have decided to go back to the basics. Forms of expression were by choice limited to the simpler photographic means. A film camera with 35mm and 50mm lenses loaded with a monochromatic emulsion was pretty much it. More intimate story is revealed and a humble reminder that the world of sports is not all about the triumph and the glory of the few chosen champions of the day.

Black and white photographs presented with a real image borders were probably the thing that got me hooked on photography in the first place. All those perfectly composed masterpieces of the likes of Cartier-Bresson, Koudelka and even some of our local reporters of the eighties era, such as Tone Stojko, have always left me breathless. The purest art form, when success and failure is decided at the very moment it clicks. As far as I am concerned, it is the essence of photography, and all its derivatives, while admirable undertakings, are merely genres. When I choose to go that way, cropping is not an option, even if it would improve on an occasional sloppy framing. I simply prefer to take it as a bittersweet lesson.

World Rowing Bled 2011

WR_Bled_2011-013

It is the 4th time around for Slovenia’s prime destination of Bled to host a World rowing championship. With so many experts, dedicated to the rowing sport, available in the relatively small municipality of Bled, nothing, but a flawlessly organized event, was expected. And that is exactly what has happened during the last days of August and well into the first week of September 2011; a memorable celebration of sportsmanship, blessed with the idyllic alpine scenery. A Winter’s Tale

It must have been more than a decade, since the last time I have used a film camera as a tool for landscape photography. What was once a source of uttermost joy, but also frustration, has now returned into my life. When digital was the rising star, I embraced it without a hesitation. I realized its potential from the very beginning. The next big thing has arrived, we are saved from the dark dungeons, and mixing all of those smelly cauldrons of chemicals is a thing of the past. Hoo-ray! Or so I thought. We youngsters, we even took some time to tease the old boys, the established, the skeptics. “Meh …, it won’t fly,” they replied with their grim, worried faces. But it did. It took off immensely and wiped the world (almost) clean of what has flourished for more than a century in less than a decade. (more…)
